For a while now, I have been trying to figure out what I should share with the people out there that can benefit them the most. What should I talk about in my first blog that could make a difference?

For those who know me, you know that I’m sort of a health freak and that I have been this way throughout my 15 year NFL career. This is probably one of the reasons I had to fight guys away from my locker before and after practice, and before games. I have always viewed my body as a temple that should be taken care of just the way a person takes care of their kids, their cars or their houses.

I am not a doctor nor do I ever dream of becoming one. But I have come to realize that a lot of people have been plagued with health problems for years and might possibly be helped by a few fitness tips that I am happy to share. The bottom line is this: you have nothing to lose but maybe a few bucks on some cheap oil.

Have you ever heard of oil pulling? While it is a simple process that only takes about 20 minutes of your time each day, its benefits can change your life.

I came across an oil pulling website years ago and started to read about it. What I read was unbelievable, to say the least. There is a lot of literature out there that you can read to help you get an understanding of what oil pulling is and the various methods used to do it properly.

This therapy has resolved many health concerns faced by people every day (see list below). After doing oil pulling for a while, I noticed how much better my body felt and how much energy I had throughout the day. It was an amazing feeling. For those who know me, you know that I don’t get sick very often. I heal fast and I have a high tolerance for pain. This is probably why, throughout my NFL career, I was able to play through injuries that most guys wouldn’t dare try to endure. Injuries — a torn bicep, cracked ribs, third degree AC (acromioclavicular) joint separation, torn ligaments in my wrist and an injured back — didn’t stop me as I kept motoring along. Other players with similar injuries missed significant time or were even placed on injured reserve. IR, of course, is the end of a season for a professional football player.

As I said, oil pulling is simple to do. The oils that can be used for this are unrefined, organic sunflower or sesame oil. Other types of oils have been studied for use but these two are, in my opinion, the best. I use sesame oil and it has worked really well.

The first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and before drinking any liquids, pour exactly one tablespoon of sunflower or sesame oil (or whatever oil you have chosen) into your mouth. Swish it around without swallowing it. Move it around in your mouth and through your teeth just like a mouth wash but don’t gargle it. There is no right or wrong technique in this… just use gentle movements and do this for 20 minutes.

As you swish the oil around in your mouth, you will notice that your mouth will fill up with saliva. This saliva is full of bacteria. If your mouth becomes full and you feel that you have the urge to swallow, spit the oil out and start again. But if you can, try to do the 20 minutes without stopping. I must reiterate: DO NOT SWALLOW any of this liquid because, as I stated, it is now full of disease-causing bacteria. When the oil has become saturated with the bacteria it has pulled out, it may become whitish with a thinner, milky consistency (although to what extent depends on the type of oil used).

Each time you oil pull, you will notice that the time it takes for your mouth to fill up with this bacteria-filled saliva may be different.  Don’t be alarmed. If you can handle it, it will not hurt you to continue with the process until your mouth fills up, but I recommend that you do it just for the 20 minutes.

At the end of your oil pulling session, spit the oil out and then rinse out your mouth. I suggest you rinse it with warm salt water (table salt). Note: while adding the salt isn’t absolutely necessary, it is absolutely necessary to rinse your mouth with water to remove any of the bacteria left behind.

You can do oil pulling every morning if you would like or just several times a week. Listen to your body because some people can handle this somewhat better than others and you may find you need longer breaks in between sessions. For those who can handle the changes that will take place, you should try to work this in to your routine as much as you can. There is no set rule on how frequently you can do this but make a judgement according to your own personal experience. You can do the oil pulling every morning if you like, or several times a week. If you forget to do this in the morning, know that you can do it any time during the day. Just make sure your stomach is empty… usually three to four hours before eating or drinking anything.

Many people don’t know this but, a majority of our health problems begin with the mouth. It is an open wound where many impurities enter the body. Your gums then pull all of these impurities into your body and into your bloodstream. Did you know that there are over 500 species of bacteria in your mouth? Some of them are beneficial but others are down right harmful.

That sticky film known as plague that lives on your teeth is the gateway to numerous health problems. When the mineral salts in saliva combine with plaque, tarter is formed on the teeth and brushing alone cannot remove it. This plaque then builds up on the gum line where bacteria accumulates (in the spaces between your teeth). Toxins produced by the bacteria in the plaque then irritate your gums. This can cause them to become inflamed and bleed — a condition called gingivitis. All of this, in turn, can cause your gums to separate from your teeth, forming spaces between the teeth and gums that become infected.

If you take care of your mouth, you will absolutely be taking care of your health as well.

Thank you for taking time out to read my first post. I hope you have enjoyed it and have learned some valuable tips on how to get on the path to a healthy lifestyle so that you can live life more enjoyably.  If you would please leave a comment (good or bad), I would appreciate it.
