The Atlanta Falcons announced their captains for their home opener Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and they are QB Matt Ryan, WR Julio Jones, WR Eric Weems, DT Jonathan Babineaux and CB Desmond Trufant.

Captains on an NFL football team embody three key attributes: caring, courage and consistency. These guys can steer their team to a supreme level of excellence and their qualities are on display through good times and bad. Being named a team captain is more than just a title. It is actually quite an honor.

Weems and Ryan were captains last season and Babineaux, Jones, and Trufant are the newbies to the bunch. All have shown that they are willing to put in the work without cutting corners. They have earned the respect of their teammates and coaches.

“It’s an honor and sign of respect,” Babineaux said of the honor. “I’m thrilled to be a captain for this team.”
