Atlanta Falcons rookie wide receiver/return specialist J.D. McKissic (Arkansas State) caught the attention of fans, coaches and media with his impressive 2016 campaign. Many felt that with his solid training camp and preseason, he had done enough to secure a spot on the roster.

Apparently the Falcons front office did not. McKissic was waived today as NFL teams worked to cut their rosters down to 53 men prior to 4:00 p.m.

The former Red Wolf had kick returns of 101 yards, 50 yards and 30 yards during the three preseason games in which he played. He also had some spectacular catches and finished with eight receptions for 79 yards.

McKissic had been battling with veterans Eric Weems, Nick Williams and Aldrick Robinson for a roster spot.

It will be interesting to see if the undrafted rookie makes it through waivers and lands on the practice squad for the Dirty Birds.

In college, McKissic played in 49 games. He posted 289 receptions for 2,838 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also returned 54 kickoffs for 1,473 yards and had a 27.3 kickoff return average.
